Tell us a little about yourself and your journey to where you are now?
Oh gosh, where to begin? I grew up with a deep love for nature- it’s always been a part of who I am. From the mossy rocks behind my childhood home to the potted plants that filled every corner of my grandmother’s house, I’ve always found peace and beauty in the natural world. But it wasn’t until later in life that I realized I could bring that sense of calm and connection into people’s lives through art. That’s when the idea for Austin Moss Creations was born. I wanted to create something that not only looked beautiful but also brought people closer to nature, even indoors. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share my passion with others.
What inspired you to become a biophilic artist; what are your passions?
Nature has always been my biggest inspiration. There’s something about the way moss feels under your fingers, the textures of different plants, and the quiet beauty of it all. That connection to the natural world is what drives me as an artist. I think my passion lies in helping people slow down and appreciate the beauty around them- whether it’s through a piece of preserved moss art or simply pausing to admire the leaves on a tree. I believe art has the power to heal and reconnect us to what really matters, and that’s what I hope to bring to every project.
Could you tell us about your creative process and the techniques you use?
Oh, it’s definitely a blend of intuition and planning. I start by immersing myself in the materials- whether it’s different types of preserved moss, ferns, or driftwood. Each project is like a puzzle. I don’t force the design; I let the natural elements guide me. For our wild walls, I love to keep things organic, with no strict patterns, just letting the moss and branches flow in a way that feels true to nature. For our structured and combination walls, there’s a bit more precision, but the goal is always to maintain that sense of natural beauty. I think it’s about striking a balance between artistry and allowing the materials to speak for themselves.
Are there specific themes or messages you aim to convey through your art?
Absolutely. At the heart of it all is the theme of connection- to nature, to ourselves, and to the spaces we inhabit. I want people to feel a sense of calm and grounding when they see our work. There’s also a message about sustainability woven into everything we do. Using preserved moss and natural elements, we create long-lasting pieces that don’t require water or sunlight, but still bring the beauty of nature into our daily lives. It’s a gentle reminder that we can live in harmony with the natural world.
What advice do you have for those looking to use moss in their biophilic design art or any other advice that comes to mind?
Don’t be afraid to experiment! Working with moss is such a tactile and forgiving medium, and it invites you to get your hands dirty and play around. Whether you’re creating something small or tackling a larger piece, let the materials lead you. And remember, perfection isn’t the goal. Nature isn’t perfect, and that’s what makes it beautiful. So, embrace the imperfections, and let your creativity flow. Also, I always tell folks- find joy in the process. Creating with natural materials can be such a meditative experience if you let it be.
